Do Akitas get cold? Let's dispel myths

Although American Akitas have thick fur, their ability to tolerate frost is often overestimated. Unlike their northern relatives, such as huskies or Siberian huskies, Akitas have a less dense undercoat. This makes them sensitive to the cold, especially in harsh winters.

How to protect your Akita from the cold?

• Warm housing.
The aviary should have an insulated floor and a well-insulated booth, selected according to the size of the dog.

• Proper nutrition.
The winter diet should be enriched with more caloric food to provide the dog with additional energy.

• Water at room temperature.
Hot water can trigger a cough.

• Paw protection.
If necessary, you can use special waxes or ointments to protect the paws from chemical reagents and cold.

• Individual approach.
Puppies, elderly dogs and dogs with weakened health need special attention and additional insulation.

When to take the dog home?

At temperatures below -15°C, it is recommended to take the dog home or in a warm room for the night.

Remember! Your Akitas are family members who need your care and attention. Providing them with comfortable conditions in winter, you will extend the life of your pets and strengthen your bond.
